I would try this:

Download the current full installer and save it. After, remove Firefox. Do not remove user information. After, reboot the computer. Then the full installer.

The Good news is that your solution seems to have worked. The not so good news is that there is now an icon like an attached disk drive that shows up on my desktop that I can't get rid of. If I quit Firefox and drag it into the trash when I open Firefox again it just puts this 172.5 Meg file back on the desktop. I tried moving it to the Applications folder but that didn't work it just created an alias.

On Windows, the red button has an X on it and closes the program. Is this different on Macs?

Have you tried looking in the folder?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

If you close all open windows and only leave the menu bar then you would have to open a new window. Otherwise you would have to leave a window open and minimize the Firefox application to the dock.

The icon i'm referring to, is in the middle of the screen shot attached. I tried moving it to the trash and then reopening FF with the option/shift key held down and it recreated the file again. clicking on this icon does nothing, it won't open to see what is inside.

Wow, Nice view.

Do a right click on that icon and select Properties. What does it say?

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.

Open the Firefox disk image file and drag the Firefox program into the Applications folder on your hard drive. You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but instead drag it out of the DMG folder.
