How can I automatically have incoming mail be categorized in subfolders in incoming mail?

How do I train incoming emails to automatically be placed in certain created incoming mail subcategories such as advertisements, work and family? In Outloook I can create message rules for certain emails from certain senders.

Thunderbird calls them message filters. Otherwise, the concepts are pretty much the same.
