A new tab opens every few minutes, each named "jot (GIF Image, 1 x 1 pixels)", with a black screen with a white dot in the middle. How to stop it?
This suddenly began happening last night after dinner. I've downloaded latest versions of Firefox and Adobe, and have done the Firefox "reset", but it keeps on happening.

Do you have any security software (Kaspersky: Banner Ad Blocker) running on your computer?
Nothing in particular. Usual settings in Preferences.
Are any other pages open in Firefox when this happens, or was Firefox closed?
To test whether it's an external request, could you temporarily make Safari your default browser and see whether the GIF starts opening in Safari? See: Mac OS X: How to change your default email application or web browser. And for later, see: Make Firefox your default browser.
With a Private Firefox Window open, it doesn't happen, but every few minutes a new non-Private session opens with a "jot" tab. A Safari session has been open for quite a while and it doesn't seem to be happening there.
Does it have effect if you set Safari as the default browser?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.
