I download a selection of podcasts every day using the Juice podcast manager. I have been doing this for many years - until the last FireFox upgrade to Ver 62.0 (64-bit). Since the upgrade, many of my podcasts still work, but many do not. Instead of having names like ... 5LiveSciencePodcast-20180916-5LiveScienceBiomimicry.mp3 (size = 46,572 KB) ...or... NewsQuizExtra-20180914-Episode3.mp3 (size = 41,596 KB)

they now have names like p06l2jy6.mp3 (size = 1KB) ...or... p06lbfhf.mp3 (size = 1KB)

They don't play - but with a size of 1KB, I wouldn't expect them to. Of the 13 podcasts I downloaded yesterday, 7 are 1KB files with these funny titles.

Maybe this has nothing to do with FireFox - but if not, it's an unfortunate coincidence that it started immediately after the FireFox upgrade.

I wanted to downgrade FireFox to the previous version to see if it was that, but the website warned me off doing that, saying that I would lose stored settings etc, and that my PC would blow up and springs and cogwheels would come flying out of it. Well, no - it didn't really say all that - but it kind of gave the impression that something pretty serious would happen.

Hi, please Backup :

Note : the issue could be in your Profile.

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

See if you can look at the 1KB files with NotePad or similar. Might be a text file or something else that may be a pointer to the larger MP3 audio files.

Pj - Thanks for the suggestion. I think I know now what the strange filenames on the 1KB files are. While Juice was downloading the podcast into a folder, I watched the folder and refreshed it constantly with F5 so I could see its length growing. While the file is downloading, it has a name like "p06lbfhf.mp3.partial", then when it has finished downloading, the filename changes to the name of the podcast - so the unusual filename seems to be a temporary one used during the download. In some cases, however, the file downloads instantaneously - well, in the time it takes a 1K file to download - and in that case, it is never given its podcast name, and if the ".partial" ever appears, it is too briefly to see. I wrote to BBC and told them about it, and when I downloaded 14 podcasts yesterday, they all worked, so maybe BBC has corrected it. They didn't write back to say so - but time will tell.
