When I ask for http why does firefox sometimes insist on changing it to https?
For example, if I try to get the address http://en-US.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ then firefox changes it to https://en-US.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and fails the connection because "Secure Connection Failed". This happens on most if not all http addresses which, of course, makes firefox halfway useless to me.

Well because some of the addresses are https and not http is reason it changes as that is what it is suppose to do. As per Google best practise is for everyone to be https. Not sure about the W3C.org (World Wide Web Consortium) that makes the standards and practises for web browsers and HTML/CSS, web pages.
Ok for the Secure Connection Failed. Yes there is a bug. Try : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/secure-connection-failed-error-message You might want to check the solution from this page : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1158868#answer-965894

You can ignore my previous reply since I missed that you are using a Firefox 3.0.7 version on Mac OS X 10.5.
Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5:
Firefox 16.0.2 for Mac:
- https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/16.0.2/system-requirements/
Keep in mind that Fireofx on your platform doesn't support SSL cipher suites and TLS versions used in current releases.
