How can I simply return to the Inbox, not open a new message, when I close a message?

Whether I open a message in a tab or new window, whenever I close or delete it, a new message pops up and is automatically marked Read. When I close or delete an open message I simply want to return to the Inbox, as it was.

Many of us simply don't have this problem because we read messages in the Message Pane below the list of messages.

There is an add-on that deals with the situation where you delete a message but I am not sure it will help with simply closing a message.

Thanks. I don't really care much for the Message Pane, or Preview Pane in MS Outlook, but maybe I'll give it another chance. The link above provided another link to an add-on, but the download page and instructions for that are in German, so I'm not sure how useful it will be. Still, I'll give it a shot.

Seems to be doing the job, whether I open messages in tabs or windows. Thanks again.
