I would hope by now that you have solved the problem, but if not, this may be of some help. The key you need to understand is that it can be done.
I have been able to receive and send eMail to/from Thunderbird using my old Verizon eMail address after they transitioned me to AOL. I have other problems that are posted elsewhere, but they're not relevant to your problem. Make sure that the Email Address entered as "Email Address" is a Verizon.net eMail address. For example, [email protected]. An alias may not work!
Also make sure there is consistency between the eMail address you provide, message identities, and outgoing server (SMTP) description. The outgoing server descriptions can be edited by selecting "Outgoing Server" and then adding or editing as needed. Each eMail account can have a unique outgoing server, by selecting an account, and then specifying its outgoing server by selecting the appropriate option from the "Outgoing Server (SMTP) " list.
Good luck.

Is there an account set up at all? If so, with which email provider - Verizon or AOL?
