I would like to make it as simple to download and open word files from gmail that I use in firefox. So for word files I have selected to "Open with" and libre office and marked "do this automatically for files like this from on". But still I get this confirmation dialog every time I click on a docx/doc URL in gmail http://screencast.com/t/K8T2zbAY.

Is it not possible to have the files open automatically without any confirmation (like its possible in for example Chrome)

Hi KasperPrentow, yes, it can work. If I switch from "Always Ask" to "Use Microsoft Word (default)" for DOC files and click results in the following search, I do not get the dialog:

https://www.google.com/search?q=filetype%3Adoc+site%3Amicrosoft.com

To test how Firefox runs "uncustomized" on your system, could you do a two-minute experiment?

Create a new Firefox profile

It will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash), but no themes, extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):

firefox.exe -P

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

When creating a new profile, I recommend using the default location suggested, and to avoid data loss, not re-using any existing folder. Before deleting unneeded profiles, I suggest making a backup first in case something were to go wrong.

Does Firefox remember better in the new profile?

Hello KasperPrentow, you can try to delete mimeTypes.rdf file in profile folder, to clear the associations between MIME types and programs(a new file will be created on start up or when the application first needs to write to the file).

thank you

I tried this - and again assign a program to open and mark as "do this automatically for files like this from on" - But I still get this window every time http://screencast.com/t/BEJ2lOcf - and Yes i just need to press enter - but I would rather not have the window at all.

Note that an automatic action is tied to a specific MIME type.
So if another server sends the file with a different content type then Firefox will threat this file differently.

But the behavior is the same if I open the same file from the same server again. But the good question is - is it even possible when setting firefox to open a specific file type to avoid the confirmation window

On second thought... The help article cor-el linked mentions that Firefox may prompt you every time if the file is sent with the disposition:attachment header, i.e., forced save. You can bypass that problem (change disposition:attachment to disposition:inline) using the Inline Disposition extension. It has been around for a while, but I haven't tried it myself: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../inlinedisposition/. Maybe that's what you need for Gmail.

Thanks the disposition extension did the trick.
