Why does the English (GB) Language pack say it's only got FF60 or later when the latest released version is FF59 so nobody will have an compatible version installed? Surely the older, compatible versions should still be available!!

Thanks, I didn't see that panel in the lower left.

Surely the current version should be the active one by default though! Then if it doesn't match your installed version giving a pointer to the previous versions would be rather useful! Still can't understand why the main advertised version is for an unreleased version of Firefox!

Firefox 60.0 will be released in just a few days :

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Release_Management/Calendar

Just in case you'd consider downloading Firefox in your own language :

I use Ubuntu so prefer to keep it from their repos and use the apt upgrade process for keeping uptodate, rather than downloading and installing manually and keeping uptodate via other methods.

On the Versions history page it says :

Be careful with old versions! These versions are displayed for reference and testing purposes. You should always use the latest version of an add-on.

Firefox version 60.0 will be released in only a few days (see my earlier post).

A few days time still isn't now so for FF59 is not for an old version!

The warning applies to an old version of the language pack, not about the Firefox version, which of course is not an old version.

But if you can't wait a few days to install an up to date language pack : totally your decision.

I'm sorry but it does not! Please reading the wording in the red line of the image I attached. It very clearly states I need FF60 for it as FF59 is too old, despite it being the latest released version, not that the language pack is out of date. In fact I would say that's the exact opposite to what you try and claim!!

You don't seem to understand what I've been trying to tell you ....

Yes, the up to date version of the language pack won't work with Firefox version 59.0, but it will with Firefox version 60.0, which will be released in a few days.

You now want to install an old version of the language pack, and that is what the warning is about.

See : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/english-gb-language-pack/versions/

I'm only trying to help ......

Or rather than a few days, Fx 60.0 will be out in a week time on May 9th. (2018-05-09 is May 9, 2018)

For Fx 59.0 the language pack update was available a day after the release and this time the language packs for Fx 60.0 appears to be a week early.

As shown in the Release Calendar (see the link in my first post)

To me a week = a few days (matter of opinion ..... )

Do you really need the language pack (translations for the user interface) and not a spell check dictionary? A dictionary works for all Firefox versions. A language pack only works for a specific Firefox version, so the Firefox version and the language pack version need to match.

It's the dictionary which is more important (and had installed no problem) but I generally install both even though I admit I can't say for 100% certain the language pack has ever actually made a difference to me. If I can reduce the chance of seeing American spellings of words I'm going to try to though ;-)

Anyway apologies this has spiraled so out of hand. The first reply pointed me to what I needed, whether this should have been more obvious, or if it should have been automatic with the fact my browser is at the present time still the current version, could be something for Web Devs to consider but I'm sure on the whole the have more important things to spend their time on.

So thanks to everybody for being so helpful and so quickly, even if we have gone around in circles. Good to see such a helpful and active community, even if I have made a few of you feel like you're banging your head against a wall in tandem with me ;-)

If you already have the en-GB locale from www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ then you did not need the British Language Pack.

The Language Packs are a option for those who want to have say one Firefox install but be able switch between one or more other languages for the user interface or UI as they change the language of the Menus and Options/Preferences etc. They have nothing to do with the spell checker.
