open sites in new window instead of the current window without having to rightclick
I want the links that I click on to automatically open in a new tab instead of overriding the existing window. I want them to do this automatically, without having to click the right button.
This is how it worked before, and it's a much easier way to surf. Suddenly, last time Firefox was updated, it changed, and now I cannot get the settings back to what it was, even when following detailed instructions.

Hi,
You can try to toggle the option Open new windows in a new tab instead in Tools (Alt + T) > Options > Tabs. Please also note that if the website code has since been altered, you may have to use middle-click.
I already did that, and the box is checked. It still overrides the first window.
I think the option you mention is meant to make the link open in a tab rather than opening an entirely new Firefox window.. That is not the same problem.
Since the introduction of tabbed browsing in Firefox, the default has always been to over-write the currently selected tab with the new page when left-clicking a link or bookmark. You can open a link or bookmark in a new tab by using the following procedures or by installing and setting some preferences within some add-ons. You may have previously used an add-on that is no longer compatible with Firefox (look in Add-ons > Extensions for disabled items).
To open a bookmark or link in a new tab, on the link or bookmark:
- right-click and choose "Open in new tab"
- middle-click (press the mouse wheel button)
- CTRL+left-click
- See --> http://www.7is7.com/software/firefox/shortcuts.html (under "Web Navigation" section)
Some add-ons:
- Tab Utilities --> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-utilities/ (light-weight extension)
- Tab Mix Plus --> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ (heavy-weight extension)
- Search for other tab related add-ons --> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
