I am on an HP Pavilion DV7, running windows 7 Home Premium SP 1, 64-bit, 4 GB ram. This was also happening on this laptop using FF 7. This also happens when I run in safe mode. I have tried just starting and not leaving my home page (Google), and it still happens. It is not only FF that freezes, the whole machine grinds to a halt, and then after about 5 minutes Norton 360 tells me that FF is doing a large amount of read activity. I have tried running with Norton disabled, same result.

After the hang, everything returns to normal, and ff works normally, until the next time I close and restart ff, or the next time I reboot and start ff.

Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

How about with a new, empty profile? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic%20Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile

Creating a new profile solved my problem!! This has been bugging me for months, glad I reported it.
