I just moved to Colorado. Every time I search for a "store near me" it give me locations for someplace in the San Francisco Bay area. I am over 1,000 miles from there. How do I get my Firefox browser to realize that I am living in Thornton, Colorado?

Did you insure Windows 11 geo locator is turned on and that your not using VPN/Proxy for your browser settings or ISP settings.

Hi Sandy, one possibility is that the site stored your old location in a cookie. If you test in a private window (Ctrl+N) -- which won't have access to old cookies -- does the site do any better in figuring out your address?

Sites usually guess your location first using your IP address, which is assigned by the internet service provider connecting you to the web. You can use a site like https://www.iplocation.net/ to see what public databases list for your IP address's location. When I click "Show more details" on that page, I see a range of opinions two cities in my area and Redmond, Washington (strange).

If you give a site permission to obtain your precise location, and your device does not have a GPS radio, Firefox will use a Google service to look up nearby WiFi hotspot names. If you moved a router from your old address to the new one, it's possible Google does not have the new router coordinates and is continuing to provide the old location back to Firefox, which it then will provide to the site.

Are you using a proxy or VPN?

You can check the connection settings.

  • Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet, select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":
