Thunderbird 91.x Calendar (OSX) Print Preview - no longer can preview or print selected events/tasks

Looks like Thunderbird 91.x Calendar (OSX) has a totally new Print dialogue but useful functionality has disappeared.

Print Preview - no longer can preview or print Selected events/tasks.

Previously, you could tick the box for a choice of What to Print:

  • Current view
  • Selected events/tasks
  • Custom date range

The second option was really, really useful and I used it all the time to only print out selected Events from different dates. It is missing from the new Print dialogue and you can no longer copy text from the print preview (which was very useful as well).

Can anyone suggest anything?

I agree that Print is a bit of a pain in 91*

First: 'File' > 'Print' is not Print, it is actually 'Print Preview' - just to confuse the issue. I'm trying to get that altered, so if you could offer your support by voting for this bug it would be appreciated. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1732511

In Calendar File > Print - opens the first set of options so you can select what to print. Choose the layout - how info is displayed - which is a drop down set of options.

  • List
  • Monthly Grid
  • Weekly Planner

Choose what to print: - these are checkboxes for: Events Tasks > Completed Tasks > Tasks with no due date

Choose the date range: From and TO - will be in the form of month year Whatever you choose from those settings determines what is shown on the left side - a print preview

Click on 'Next' to proceed to next stage This now shows you the typical 'Print Preview' screen There are more options on the right side. Choose your preferences - Printer, number of copies, Orientation, Pages, Colour mode The 'More Settings' has an downward arrow - click on it to see extra choices Paper Size, Scale, Pages per sheet, Margins Options to choose whether you want headers and footers printed, Print backgrounds and also print usiing the system dialog... Then finally click on Print

Please Note: the easy customisation for headers and footers has been removed from this Print form. I have created a bug requesting it be included but it's falling on unwilling ears. I would appreciate you backing me up on this if you feel it should be included. Bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1731601

If you need help with header or footer content eg: getting page numbering bottom center etc then please ask as it is still possible to do this via the Config Editor.

There are several problem in my opinion. I'm finding I cannot choose a date prior to June 2021 as the limited list of date options are listed in a month year but no longer use the mini calendar. Impossible to set date to be from jan this year or any prior year, I can only select jan 2022. Do you see the same issue? If yes please support bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1732740

Selected Events are no longer offered as an option. So you end up either needing to do each one as a separate print or allow the date range to cover every event between which may include many unwanted events. I've created a bug report regarding this. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1732734

Thanks for these ideas. I have added my support to your bugzilla post about Print Preview/Print.

The flexibility of Thunderbird before was when you could select just certain Events (in Calendar) or even email Messages and get a Print Preview of them meant that you could then highlight the contents of the Print Preview and copy & paste it somewhere. This was genuinely really useful.

It's not even very environmentally friendly narrowing down your print options like has been done in 91.* Print functionality was very useful for more than just printing to paper!

For exanple, I was able to search for just appointments that were Trustees Meetings. Then I could highlight the ones between the dates I wanted and FIle=>Print and get a Preview that allowed me to copy and paste those appointments into en email.

The reason we are experiencing problems stems fron the following. The issues seem to have arisen because the Firefox developers have done a load of work revising the Print engine. Thunderbird relies on the print engine from Firefox, and the revised version doesn't provide the type of capability that Thunderbird really needed. Thunderbird cannot simply go back to using the old code because the old print engine will be going away.

One would have expected good communcation between the powers that be in Thunderbird and the Firefox developers to explain requirements. Clearly something fell short, but I have no idea what or why.

Same issue here. The dialog only lets you print a month worth of calendar entries which is madness. Even getting back to being able to print a single day would be an important first step.

If anyone has the print issues discussed, please check out the bug reports I previously mentioned and add your support or at the least please vote for the bugs. The more people state the issue they have and why they need a fix the more likely it will get attention. Explain what you need to achieve and it's purpose.
