How Can I Change the Behavior of the Back Button?

How can I change how the back button behaves? Right now, it takes at least two clicks in quick succession on the button to get the browser to return to the previous page. It used to be that I only had to click once. I tried to find a setting for this in the Options and Customize menus but could not. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me figure this out.

Sounds that there are multiple history entries that prevent Firefox from going back. You can hold the left mouse button on either back or forward button to open the Tab history list. If you hover an entry then you should see the URL as usual at the bottom of the Firefox window.

Just to be sure that this isn't caused by an extension:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
