Thunderbird keeps giving me this message: "Sending of password for user mreiss did not succeed. Mail server pop.telus.net responded: internal server error." I click OK and it tells me: "Login to server pop.telus.net with username mreiss failed." I enter my password & check Password Manager to remember it and the whole thing starts all over again.

What are your server settings? They should be: pop.telus.net on port 995, SSL/TLS security, authentication = normal password, User name = email address. What is your security/AV program, and is it scanning email?

It worked for a while but now the same thing's happening again. My security program is BitDefender but I've had it for years and this hasn't happened until recently.

Bitdefender like all anti virus products updates regularly, nothing to say it is the same day to day. Try turning off email scanning in bit defender as a first diagnostic step and see how it goes. A reboot after such changes is always germane.

Compatibility between AV programs and TB comes and goes as each program updates. You should disable BitDefender's action on TB anyway (leave the real-time background scanner on), but the best test to see if it's affecting TB performance is to run Windows in safe mode, to bypass startup programs like AV.

The problem is back again. How do I disable BitDefender on Thunderbird?

Ask bit defender, it is their product. I have never actually see a copy installed.

This might help you in that regard. https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/2092/

Several people have suggested turning off email scanning in BitDefender and/or disabling it on Thunderbird. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm using BitDefender's free version which they don't give you any answers for and doesn't have the same interface as the versions they do give answers for.

I just started Windows (7) in Safe Mode (with network) so, presumably, no BitDefender and still have the same problem. I get: "Sending of password for user mreiss did not succeed. Mail server pop.telus.net responded: internal server error." I click OK and it tells me: "Login to server pop.telus.net with username mreiss failed." It seems that even if you're doing everything right and have all the correct settings, Telus mail is still not working for the last 2 weeks or so:

I don't know if the problem is with all account types or in some locales, but I communicate with a Telus user with an IMAP account without issues.

Similar problem, began shortly after Nov 11 2019 update to Thunderbird 60.9.1-- cannot retrieve mail AT ALL, error message is:

"Sending of password for user (gmail address) did not succeed. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: Username and password not accepted."

Email address is correct and I am using correct password. Have tried all trouble shooting tips I can find, no change -- this renders Thunderbird unusable, but it's where I have group contacts and saved mails.
