I do NOT want a JUNK folder!! When I mark something as JUNK I want it GONE! I am so tired of the JUNK folder. I cannot stress this enough.
I have been overwhemed with JUNK/SPAM since at least November. I get more than 100 pieces of Junk a day. If I mark it as Junk, it goes into a Junk folder and I have to delete it from there. Then it goes into the Trash folder and I have to delete it from there. Prior to the last Update, I could right click on a folder and select Delete and everthing in the folder was gone. That option disappeared with the last update and I spend way too much time getting rid of things. I do NOT want a JUNK folder. I want JUNK GONE!!!. Why would anyone save JUNK? I have tried deleteing the Junk folder but it keeps coming back. I also do NOT need a Trash folder. When I delete mail I want it GONE. My mail has become a living nightmare. Mail that I want to keep I put in folders. Mail I have no desire to ever see again, I want GONE. I do NOT want it in any folder. What on earth do I have to do to make Thunderbird actually Delete what I mark as DELETE instead of sending it to Trash? How can I get Thundebird to delete Junk instead of sending it to a Junk folder? I am so angry I can hardly stand it. Yahoo makes no effort to block anything I mark as Block or Spam. Part of that is because this Spammers change addresses every 5 min. so that Blocks do not work in many cases. Before November I got maybe 5 pieces of junk a day. I get well over 100 now and can find no relief whatsoever.

Holding the Shift key when deleting usually bypasses the Trash folder. As for the amount of junk you rec'd be maybe you need to be more selective where you visit and provide your email address.
There are retention settings in junk. This article explains Thunderbird junk controls. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Junk_Mail_Controls

THank you! I did not know about the Shift and will try that. As far as being "selective" I am. I have been using computers since 1980 and have never had the Junk I am getting since the holidays. I do not browse odd sites and have been using the same sites for years. I recently purchased some health insurance. I suspect that the insurance shopping had something to do with the garbage I am getting. Much of it concerns insurance. None of it actually comes from the insurance companies but comes from various ad companies. I made the mistake of trying to unsub from 3 of those companies and that increased my Junk. Now I also get drug offers, walk-in-tubs, etc. Most of the mail has to do with health, drugs and fitness. I can see no end to it.
In your Account Settings, under Junk Settings, there should be an option 'automatically delete junk mail older than X days' -- you can specify the value of X. Have you tried that?
I have done that but I don't want it for even a day. I want it gone immediately. I no longer mark anything as "Junk" but I still have some items marked that way. I see no benefit at all to even marking things as Junk. Why qould I ever want to keep Junk for even a minute? It's a mystery to me why it does not go directly to the Trash. Thanks to you, I did find an option to send it to Trash. I am sorry to be such a pain but this is making my crazy. I am so tired of it. I tried blocking Junk at Yahoo but it seems to increase geometrically. I doubt that Yahoo is blocking anything. I don't get this garbage from my Gmail account. It it were not such a pain to do, I get rid of Yahoo altogether but most og my mail comes that way. There ought to be a law against these Junk mailers.
Junk filters make mistakes. I wouldn't want my junk deleted on sight without my being able to review it beforehand.
If you mark as Junk and as Not Junk as appropriate you help train Thunderbird's junk filter to make it more accurate.
I know of several services that offer to take your junk and use it to attack spam and junk sources and the "spamvertizing" sites that they often link to. I can't comment on the effectiveness of these services, but they do present a use case for actively managing junk and not just automatically deleting.
I can't see any harm in allowing junk mail to mail to languish in your Junk folder for a day before it is automatically deleted for you. Again I'd reiterate that it will make mistakes and you would be extremely lucky if it never puts good messages into your Junk folder.
I hope you are looking at your gmail account's Spam folder. MIne frequently includes good messages that shouldn't be there. Unfortunately, gmail's filters appear to be influenced by what other users classify as spam, and many users are lazy and mark stuff as spam just because they are bored of receiving it, even though they do have a legitimate unsubscribe route open to them. If I have ever asked a site to send me email then their email messages are not "unsolicited" and therefore not technically spam.

Thsnk you very much for the explanation. I had not considered that. I get very little personal e-mail. I do have some Subs that i have had for years. I would be disappointed if the Subs were deleted but, although I very much enjoy them, they are not crucial and I probably would not miss them if they ended up deleted. I do not use e-mail for business. I use Slack which does not come into my mailbox. I use it on my phone and, so far, I am keeping my e-mail off of my phone. Until I installed a Call Blocker, I was getting endless Junk calls as well as e-mails. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my question but I have been going nuts with this mess for months now. The phone calls have stopped but the e-mail is still a nighmare but has improved since I learned how to bypass the Junk folder and go straight to Trash. Thank You!
I just right-click on junk-folder, select empty junk and then compact. That's all.
I used to do that but after the last update I no longer seem to have this option and now have to select them all to delete them or keep them for a day to have them auto- delete. With more than 100 of these every day, I do NOT want to wait, I want them GONE. I tried Blocking them at Yahoo but Yahoo apparently ignores their "Block" feature and I keep getting more and more of these. I am overwhelmed with Junk.
That's odd as I have the latest (38.6.0 English edition) and I have it.
There are junk-settings both on account-basis and global. From settings / your account / junk settings there is a shortcut to global settings (or use help / options / security / junk) where you can set it to be deleted when marked as junk.
But consider what Zenos said about training your spam-filter. And as he said mails could be wrongly labeled as spam. Just look at all questions here about their (important) mail being wrongly stopped as spam.
I do not see an answer to : how do I delete junk mail from Trash folder. I am fine with the junk folder and deleting that. However I do not want to cherry pick junk symbols out of Trash, and I don't want to delete all trash.
Click on the Junk column to sort on that. Select all the junk by clicking the first one, then moving to the last one and hold the shift key while clicking it. Press a delete key.
I still do not like having a JUNK folder. I seldom mark anything as JUNK any more but Thunderbird has learned to recognize a lot of JUNK. When I dleete JUNK, I want it GONE but instead it goes into the Trash and I have to delete it again.
I also leave some items in my Trash that I am not quite ready to delete so I don't often Delete everything that is in the Trash.
Mostly, I just wish there was a way to keep from getting JUNK in the first place. It does no good to Unsubscribe from most things as they ignore that and send more JUNK. I wish I had never Unsubed from anything.
For a while I went to Yahoo Mail every day and marked items as Junk there but they keep sending those things and more. I almost believe that Yahoo is selling e-mail addresses as the JUNK has been increasing since the Holidays. I had very little JUNK before then.
What intrigues me the lack of right click on 'Junk' folder and select 'Empty Junk', which you recall being available in the past.
I can easily reproduce this on my computer but I have to change the Account Settings > Junk Settings.
For example: POP mail account has this setting in my Junk Settings for the mail account. under 'Destination and Retention'
- select: 'Move new junk messages to:'
For POP:
- select: 'Junk folder on 'pop mail account name'
- click on OK
This will offer me the right click option 'Empty Junk', so I can scan the emails and get rid of all in one go.
However, if I change the settings to either of the following: select: 'Junk folder on 'Local Folders' OR select: 'Other' and choose 'Junk on Local Folders' click on OK
Then I lose the right click option on 'Junk' in the pop mail account, which seems to be your issue.
Please check your Junk Settings in Account Settings for the mail account. Point it to the correct junk folder for the mail account.
Report back on results of getting the right click drop down menu to display option to 'Empty Junk'.
Been there, done that, doesn't work. It used to work which made it easy to deal with JUNK but it has not worked in quite a while now. It quit working after some update. WIN7 Home, PC. I am holding off on a WIN10 upgrade due to some software which is not yet WIN10 ready. I most likely will not use 10 until I get a new laptop which is still a few months away as I have other expenses just now. I miss being able to easily deal with the JUNK. Even if I delete the JUNK folder, it returns the next time I open Thunderbird.
There should be a way to stop getting all of this garbage, more than 100 pieces a day! Until the last holiday season I got very little Junk. Then, last November it began to come, 50+ at least twice a day. I get almost none from GMail which is fairly good at filtering it but Yahoo Mail does little if anything even when I go online and spend a lot of time marking things as Junk. I continue to get them. Yahoo seems uninterested in doing any Blocking.
