Windows 7 with windows essentials antivirus.

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Does the problem go away?

unable to start in safe mode...previously was able to start in safe mode but the options available were zero nothing to offer me an alternative/whatever thanks for your interest

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#AVAST

See the link for a way to fix your copy of avast so it does not cause the error.

matt, I have win-7 with microsoft essentials

Well that issue has existed for Avast for a very long time, and I have never heard of it for any other security software. So I think you should check your installed programs to be sure you do not have avast.

Otherwise fix MSE so it excludes that file.

matt, never heard of avast, much less download or install i use win-7 with windows essentials for antivirus
