No matter how often I upgrade/reinstall FFX, websites constantly tell me my browser is out of date - why?

Starting several months ago, my Firefox gets warning notices from sites that my browser is outdated, and when I try to log into Salesforce Marketing Cloud, I get this message:

You are using a browser currently not supported by the Marketing Cloud. You must upgrade your browser before you can log in. Please work with your internal resources if you need assistance upgrading your browser. If you need further assistance or more information, please contact Global Support.

I have contacted support for my company, as well as at Salesforce, neither can figure out why I'm getting these messages. I have also updated/reinstalled many times. I figured at this point, it was time to turn to the professionals.

Help me Firefox support person. You're my only hope.

Take a look at Help > About Firefox in your Firefox installation and see what version you have.

Or use Help > Troubleshooting Information and use the Copy text to clipboard button at the top of that tab, then paste that information in the Reply box in this thread.

He (FFX) tells me that he is all up to date, at version 43.0 - I've attached screencaps of two instances of sites telling me it's out of date, along with the About Window.

Thanks for your reply!

Does the UserAgent string in Troubleshooting Information show Firefox 43.0 also? Should look like this - Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0

Here you go! Sorry I forgot this last time:

Experimental Features

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20151014 Firefox/4.0.0; xs-rTABxpCdhAg;CigyBE;

That's why websites are thinking you are using an old version; either Firefox 2.0 {the rv:2.0.1" or Firefox 4.0 {the Firefox/4.0.0}.

That also shows that you have a user.js file. That is an optional file that some malware has created and used in the past to change the UserAgent, but that type of UserAgent change was blocked from happening via user.js quite awhile ago, like around Firefox 10 or 11, iirc.

The fix is: Go back into Troubleshooting Information and use the Profile Folder - Show Folder button to open your Profile folder. Once the Windows Explorer window opens to your Profile folder you need to close Firefox while leaving the Windows Explorer window open. Then locate that user.js file near the bottom of the window and right-click it and select Delete to delete that file. Then close the Windows Explorer window. When you start Firefox view your Troubleshooting Information again and verify that your UserAgent is fixed and shows Firefox 43.0 at the end of that string.

Thanks so much for all your help!

I found the user.js file and deleted it, then restarted Firefox, but my user agent is still:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20151014 Firefox/4.0.0; xs-rTABxpCdhAg;CigyBE;

(

I tried rebooting my machine too, just to be sure, but it still reads the same.

Did you check the content of the user.js file?

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then create a new profile.

The bad useragent string might be stored internally by now (most user.js settings get pulled into your main settings file). This article has steps to try to clear it if that's where it lurks: How to reset the default user agent on Firefox.
