I want to be able to open items (such as click on the results of a search) and not have it open in a new tab or window, just open in the same window (as the search results).

Type about:preferences#general<Enter> in the address bar. Check the settings under Tab.

Awesome! I checked off "Don't load tabs until selected" and that seems to do the trick. Thanks for the help!

Hmmm... I stand corrected-- the settings I changed still either open in a new window or tab. I am looking for it to open in the same window and the same tab... is there a way to do this?

Some links are pre-programed to open in new links or new windows. You can override this by right clicking and selecting open . . . . . .

It only gives me the option to open in a new tab or new window when I right click.

Hmmm. Well then, that is what you have to work with. Unless one of the big guys knows hot to change it.

For links opened via JavaScript you can look at this pref:

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
