When I click some hypertext on a web page on Firefox, I get sent to a new window, without headings except for the URL of that page. Here's some examples:

What's up with that? It's extremely annoying. It's new.

I also get text in articles that look like hypertext but when you put the cursor over it, it's an ad.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

I have an iMac using OSX 7.5. Which of those programs would work for my computer?

Note that the OP is on a Mac.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

You can look at Adblock Plus to hide pop-ups from (double) underlined text on web pages.

You need to subscribe to a Filter list (e.g. the EasyList).

There are many cyber crooks who create legitimate links on pages with attractive punch lines those attracts the users to click upon them but these links contains harmful viruses like adware or browser hijackers which can affect your system or your browser badly and even hooks deep into your computer system and may affect the registry files by adding it selves in the registry files or destroying some of the stored ones. You can take many precautionary methods to get affected with such viruses such as using Safe Mode of the browser. But if it has already infected your computer then anti-virus will be sometimes not capable of eliminating those files. As it can stop the viruses but does not make the files perfect again as it should be, so it leads to some of the error messages or blue screen of death which can be eliminated using PC Cleaner Tool.
