Hello.

My problem is that when I close the FireFox browser I get the "FireFox has stopped working" message. It's pretty annoying. I've read some other posts here that described a similar problem and have tried some of the suggestions in them including:

A clean install, a browser reset, running in safe mode, unchecking hardware acceleration, disabling extentions and plugins one at a time, uninstalling my antivirus (avast), rolling back to version 23.01 and checking run in compatibility mode that someone claimed helped them. None of this was effective.

It seems like after a computer restart the browser will be ok for 2-4 closings and then it will start with the message on every closing. Also, after I uninstalled avast it was good for 6 closings. Rolling back also gave me about 6 message free closings. But then the messages start and doesn't stop.

Is there anything else I can try? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Those are problems with the Flash plugin.

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Ok, I changed my homepage to Google.. just the plain search engine page... and I am not getting the error when I close the browser from this page (with this page the only page visited on the session). I've done it 15 times straight staying for various lengths of time and there is no error.

So, I think it may be some page element or something that is setting it off.

My usual homepage is ighome.com, which is an igoogle replacement homepage. I'm going to test some other pages. Ok I can say for sure ighome.com and yahoo.com set the issue off but google.com does not. I don't know if that helps.

Also, this forum does not trigger the message either.

Yeah I already tried a reset and a clean install and it didn't help.

Does the instructions here help???? - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Hang_at_exit

Note that plugins are installed system wide and that this could be causing the issue.

Hi. Thanks for posting that. I did run the browser with no extensions or plugins and still had the issue. I think it may be related to Java. I wish I understood this better. As far as I know my java is up to date but I think FF has disabled it or disabled some part of it? Can I further disable it? Will sites that depend on it function without it?

I did try running the browser with no antivirus installed (Avast!) and this did not help.

I can see though the problem probably has something to do with webpages that probably use java applets or java or advertising using this. I believe ighome.com does use them. I'm not sure about yahoo.com though, which is another site that triggers the issue.

If you disabled all plugins, you disabled Java too.... but not javascript, which is something you dont want to disable.

I uninstalled java completely, made no difference. Re-installed, no difference. I'll look more at that page and see what else I can do.

Maybe it's a browser-javascript interaction issue?

One thing is for sure, and that is if the only page i visit is the Google homepage (not logged in) or this site (mozilla forum), the problem does not occur, ever. I can't make it happen.

If i visit yahoo.com (not logged in) (or ighome.com, logged in), as examples, it happens every time.

Did you check for problems caused by plugins or the plugin-container process?

You can also check the Task Manager for plugin-container processes when this hang happens.

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

I'm going to work through that and I'll get back to you. Thanks a lot guys for the help!

I think i tried everything there but the issue persists.

I'm a little unsure about the plugin container process stuff that you mentioned

I did disable all the plugins and that didn't help. I also tried reinitializing the plugins database.

How can i identify a plugin container process via taskmanager? How do i know the name of the process? Is it plugin container?

See the plugin-container.exe process

Ok, there is a plugin-container.exe process listed under Processes in Task Manager but it disappears at the moment when the issue occurs and the message is given.

Ok so I restarted the computer and since I did that it is now working fine... no more stopped working messages no matter what site I visit. Not sure what did it but glad all the same.

Thanks for your help!

Spoke too soon. It is still doing it. Odd thing.

Ok, pretty much have tried everything and nothing helps. I'm pretty sure now that it is an issue with flash. Pages that require the flash player trigger the error. If i stay off flash pages or turn off flash, the error doesn't happen. In addition to trying everything suggested, I also uninstalled and tried other versions of adobe flash player and this didn't help either. I also tried a few earlier versions of FF and same deal.

I have a question.

The only message I ever get with this issue is "FireFox has stopped working" ... windows etc....this happens when I close the browser. I am able to reload the browser right away and then when I close, same story. It doesn't say anything about crashing though it seems like a kind of small quick crash.

I took a look at about:crashes in any case and found a large list of submitted crash reports over the past couple of days.

I don't understand what is written in them but I took a look and I notice it lists an OS of Windows NT. My OS is vista. Is there an error there? Seems like the event does involve the flash player.
