Video won't stream only in Firefox on Vista

The following stream will not start in Firefox on Vista (it is grayed out). Checked in IE on the same computer and does not work there either (I never use IE, only for testing for issues like this). It works in Opera on the same computer and XP on another computer so the stream itself is working.

This was working fine until about 1-2 months ago when all similar streams from the same site stopped working.

This is an example of many: http://devotional.byuh.edu/media121016

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and the cookies from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Cleared cache and the cookie for the site. Reloaded page with shift key pressed. Checked in safe mode. Still not solved.

Note that it also does not work in IE but have no idea if it ever did. I detest IE and only use it for testing things like this. It works fine in Opera.

Note that I did nothing to Firefox except maybe updating to a new version for a very long time. Also note that I have very few plugins and those were not added to or changed for well over a year. The plugins I do have are not anything special. One to add the down arrow and maybe one or two for playing videos etc.

Do you mean the Live stream link on that page that opens a new page?

That seems to open a Flash player to play and rtmp stream although the FAQ mentions Silverlight

  • rtmp://flash-streaming.byuh.edu/live/livestream

I currently see an error: "We are unable to connect to the network" , so this may only work on Campus.

Yes, the link that starts the stream. It is now grayed out when before it always worked. No changes, except for maybe a FF update, were made to the browser.

I don't remember if it opens a new page (it doesn't seem to open a new page in Opera)

Thanks for your response(s).

I want to use FF for the stream if possible..

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Flash or any other program doesn't even lanch so that cannot be the problem. The link on the page is grayed out so doesn't even work when clicked on.

It works in Opera in Vista and XP so it is not the inabilty to view the videos off campus. It also worked about 2 months ago when suddenly it stopped working.

Remember, the link is grayed out when it worked just fine before.

I could see a problem with Flash or another program if it was able to launch but it doesn't even try to launch.

I just tested it in Firefox in XP and it works there!

Can this be a Vista FF update problem?

But again, on Vista it works in Opera and not in IE or FF.

It just stopped working in FF about 2 months ago.
