Can't get Calendar to notify me about an appointment. Windows 7

I enter a date and time in Calendar so I'll be notified of an appointment. Everything works fine - it accepts the time and message- but I am never notified of the appointment in mail. This has happened since I updated to Windows 7 with a new computer. Used to work great with my old machine.
