I reloaded Firefox 20.0 this a.m. I have no functional use of the address line nor do I have use of the Search box. No search engines drop down and when I go into Manage Search, nothing can be activated. All of the .xml files for the search engines are available in the Searchplugins file. Any suggestions?

There appears to be a problem with Firefox 20 with UNC paths when using roaming profiles on a server.

This is currently investigated and tracked via this bug report.

  • bug 857672 - Address Bar not working (roaming profiles;UNC path support OS.File)

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Try to delete the search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

Try to open a new window (Firefox > New Tab > New Window) to see if that window works.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible:

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display a hidden menu bar)

Open the Customize window to set which toolbar items to display:

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

I went to the Profile, went into the first default folder and the two files noted above were not present. I clicked on the second default folder, they were there, I deleted them, but it caused no change. I have not tried the restore default set button today as I had done that yesterday with no positive result. Also, I still have the issue with the address bar also not allowing me to go anywhere after typing a web address in and hitting return/clicking on the arrow. Craig

I have used Firefox for years and prefer it to all others, but since my last update FFx is no longer useable. The thread on this issue indicates a "bug". Are we dead in the water on this issue of "no search engines" or have I missed a fix? Re-installation is no fix.

Um, this thread was on Firefox 21 and was fixed in Firefox 21. The current version is 22. Install Firefox 22
