My last laptop was killed off by a virus (don't worry i'll scan anything i transfer to my new laptop) so i bought a new laptop. I have to use Puppy Linux to go into my old laptop as the virus screwed up my log in details.

Which and where are the files i need in order to use and have firefox as it was on my old laptop,0 on my new laptop. I grabbed the entire folder of Mozilla FireFox from Program Files and went into the folder (after i transferred it) and opened the FireFox.exe, but it loads up FireFox with no bookmarks, plugins etc.

I want everything i use to have: bookmarks, plugins, styles. I just want it the same as ut use to be.

Thanks a lot in advance Sam

You're welcome. Just be be clear (and for others who may be reading), you have to replace the contents of the new profile folder, like the places.sqlite file, the bookmarkbackups folder and other files/folders, with the contents of the old profile folder. See Recover important data from an old profile for more information.

You asked, How do i check what version of FireFox i did have without loading it up. I.e. checking a file or something with the version details in it.

You can open the C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox folder and right-click on the firefox.exe file, choose Properties, then click the Details tab and it will show you the product version and other information.

Firefox data and settings (called your "profile") are NOT stored under Program Files but are stored in a special "profile folder". On Windows 7 and Vista the "default" Firefox profile folder would be here (xxxxxxxx is a random string):

C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

The AppData folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders

Once you locate the old Firefox profile you can copy that data to the profile folder on the new computer, after you download and install Firefox. See these articles for more information:

Thank you so much for your help Alice. I've replaced the previous profile folder with my old profile. How do i check what version of FireFox i did have without loading it up. I.e. checking a file or something with the version details in it.

Thank you again Sam
