ONCE AGAIN, I am having Hotmail issues through Firefox, and ONLY through Firefox!!! I had to go to PALE MOON AGAIN to use Hotmail. This is getting REALLY irritating. I can go to ANY OTHER website through Firefox with no issue, but Hotmaill? Oh no, of course not. Your damn browser refuses to cooperate and Hotmail just sits there for the past TWENTY-FOUR HOURS with a waiting symbol and stalls out, refusing to do ANYTHING to refresh the page, and when I try and open an email, Hotmail says, "We're sorry, we can't display that message right now." But when I use Pale Moon, NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER!!!! FIx your damn browser to work with Hotmail CORRECTLY this is YOUR problem!!! Since it works FINE through Pale Moon the problem is OBVIOUSLY with YOU!!! I am so sick and tired of YOUR BROWSER stalling out and causing issues ALL THE TIME! DO SOMETHING!!!

When you say Hotmail, do you mean the newer interface at

https://outlook.live.com/mail/

or is there still a Hotmail site?

If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are standard suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Tracking Protection feature, and extensions that counter ads and tracking, may break websites that embed third party content (meaning, from a secondary server).

(A) The shield icon toward the left end of the address bar usually turns a bit purplish when content is blocked. Click the icon to learn more or make an exception. See: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop.

(B) Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix usually provide a toolbar button to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you sometimes need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache (only select Cached web content, don't clear all cookies and site data)

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that. Firefox will ask you to confirm; go ahead and confirm.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Troubleshoot Mode: In this mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement?

I'm not a technological person, but I know it's not the cache or cookies. It turned out to be the fact that Firefox needed to update itself. But the fact that EVERY OTHER SITE I was on was working just fine and ONLY hotmail was having issues, tells me a lot. WHY is ONLY hotmail ALWAYS affected!? WHY can't YOU (FIREFOX) make yourself compatible with HOTMAIL!? I've had my hotmail account for over twenty years. I'm not dumping it. Other people still have hotmail. You (FIREFOX) need to make yourself COMPATIBLE with hotmail!

Hotmail is hotmail - firefox has no control how they control their access to their online email site and if they change configuration to work with different browser then it's out of Firefox control. Also it's no longer called hotmail the domain login name has changed as well. It's now outlook.live.com so the name hotmail no longer exits when you try to login it outlook.live.com now.

The problem was solved after you installed the latest Firefox update? Or it isn't solved yet?

Yes, it connected and stopped stalling when Firefox completed its update. But prior to that, no other site had issues and I could connect EVERYWHERE else with no problem. Only Hotmail kept sitting and stalling out, refusing to connect! Only Hotmail ALWAYS stalls out when Firefox has issues with itself and needs to do something.

And here we go AGAIN! It's SLOW to refresh, it "can't send my email right now" BUT Firefox IS updated to the LATEST update! I am SO SICK OF FIREFOX NOT being compatible with Hotmail! Pale Moon doesn't have this issue and sends my emails in SECONDS!

And I finally had to shut Hotmail down in Firefox and now it's REFUSING to reconnect! I'm sitting on my Yahoo default page, and it REFUSES to connect to Hotmail AT ALL. But I'm in Hotmail in Pale Moon, NO PROBLEM AT ALL!

And WHY is there NO WAY TO REACH ANYONE DIRECTLY at Firefox for ACTUAL REAL HELP!?

Firefox needs to make their product COMPATIBLE with Hotmail!!!

Get it together FIREFOX!!!

Do you mean you exited out of Firefox and restarted it, and after that Hotmail wouldn't connect?

Not out of Firefox, out of Hotmail, and now it won't reconnect. But I can totally connect through Pale Moon. No problems through Pale Moon. Only using Firefox OF COURSE!

Firefox AS USUAL just SUCKS when it comes to trying to use Hotmail because they just aren't compatible and Firefox just doesn't seem to care!

HOURS now, and it's STILL REFUSING to connect to Hotmail! But NO PROBLEM in Pale Moon. I'm getting ALL My mail in Hotmail through Pale Moon (including all my junk mail)!

I even cleared all cookies and cache, just in case through Firefox, but nope, still REFUSING to connect! But God Forbid anybody WORKING at Firefox actually CARE and DO SOMETHING to FIX the issues between Firefox and Hotmail!!!

And it's NOT 10:25pm, it's AFTER MIDNIGHT!

I suggest exiting out of Firefox and starting it up again. If that helps, try this change:

Disable the "zero round trip resumption" feature. It is intended to speed up website re-connections but occasionally seems to prevent connections. Here's how you can turn it off:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste security.tls.enable_0rtt_data and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch the value from true to false

After that, try https://outlook.live.com/mail/ again in a new tab. Any improvement?

I HAVE exited out and tried a new tab. NO DICE. DOESN'T WORK!!!

I tried what you suggested. NO, it didn't work.

When you try to load https://outlook.live.com/mail/ currently, is there a specific error message? Or do you get a progress wheel in the page? Or is it just a blank page?

Any difference if you use a compose link to generate a new message? For example:

https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/deeplink/compose?mailtouri=mailto:[email protected]

If you are not signed in to your Hotmail account, that normally would redirect you to the login page. If you are already signed in, that normally would show a new message addressed to [email protected].

Did you ever go back and review content blockers or test in Firefox's Safe Mode as suggested earlier in this thread?

I get NOTHING. It just sits on my default home page with a little loading dot as though it's TRYING to connect to Hotmail. THAT'S IT. And it does this FOR HOURS AND NOW DAYS! I am ALWAYS signed in to Hotmail. There is NO REASON FOR IT TO BE DOING THIS! I didn't have a problem until the latest Firefox update!

Again, I have NO PROBLEM loading through Pale Moon!!! This is SOLELY a problem with FIREFOX!!! FIREFOX needs to FIX this problem!!! This is ALWAYS a problem with FIREFOX!!!

Hi Delenn, I understand that this is frustrating for you. However, we have very few reports of this problem so we are asking/suggesting various things to try to figure out why it isn't working on your Firefox.

Based on the history of this thread, there was a problem when Firefox 105 was updating to a minor release update to Firefox 105. Then it was okay in Firefox 106 and Firefox 107, but the problem resumed in Firefox 108.

You've told us:

  • It's SLOW to refresh, it "can't send my email right now"
  • I finally had to shut Hotmail down in Firefox and now it's REFUSING to reconnect! I'm sitting on my Yahoo default page, and it REFUSES to connect to Hotmail AT ALL.
  • I even cleared all cookies and cache, just in case through Firefox, but nope, still REFUSING to connect!
  • It just sits on my default home page with a little loading dot as though it's TRYING to connect to Hotmail. THAT'S IT. And it does this FOR HOURS AND NOW DAYS!
  • I am ALWAYS signed in to Hotmail.

When you click the link for https://outlook.live.com/mail/ to open your email, does that address stay in the address bar while the page is loading, or does Firefox redirect to an address on https://login.live.com/ to enter your login?

Is there any difference if you test in a private window (Ctrl+Shift+P, or right-click the link to https://outlook.live.com/mail/ and choose Open Link in New Private Window)?

It wasn't redirecting at all. Just sitting on my default homepage (Yahoo news page), and in the tab, a little floating ball would flip back and forth like it was TRYING to connect to Hotmail, but that's all it would do. Flip back and forth. You suggested going to troubleshooting, so that's what I did, but once in there, what am I supposed to do? There is NOTHING in there to click on or DO. Just two buttons on the right side of the page. "Refresh." or "Cancel." I finally clicked on "refresh." Everything shut down and then NOTHING. I clicked on the Firefox icon on my desktop to load a browser page back up. That reloaded all my tabs, thankfully, including my default browser page. So I took a chance and clicked on Hotmail to TRY and see if it would reload. FINALLY it reloaded.

Look, I am 48 years old, and I am NOT technically/technologically advanced. I can turn my computer on, load a browser page, and open my bookmarks to go to my "favorite" pages. That's it. If something goes wrong, I am basically scr*wed because I don't know what to do. So I don't know how or why now it's working, but it is.

"Something went wrong and we can't sign you in right now. Please try again later."

BTW: Server status for hotmail is always 'green, no problems detected' when I get this error, so that makes me more confused on what's going on.*

That’s in Firefox, I then tried Firefox in safe mode (add-ons disabled) still same error.

I then tried restarting my PC, clearing catch/cookies, nothing seamed to matter and I have latest version of Firefox.

But, oddly (or not) when I try to sign in with IE, it logs me in just fine.

I also tried Chrome, I can log into my hotmail account just fine also.*

Proof this is a Firefox issue since this person can use another browser without a problem, and I can use another browser without a problem, but Firefox is almost ALWAYS having compatibility issues with Hotmail!

And tonight when I TRIED to use troubleshooting mode to fix the problem AGAIN because Hotmail was refusing to load up properly, I couldn't even get a refresh button to get OUT of troubleshooting mode, and then when I FINALLY was able to get out of troubleshooting mode and it went to refresh, it wiped EVERYTHING and defaulted back to "factory" settings! I've had to redo EVERYTHING but my bookmarks! My addons were gone, my malwarebytes browser guard was gone, EVERYTHING. Firefox is seriously SUCKING lately! Compatibility SUCKS! But does Firefox seem to care?! OF COURSE NOT! Where are ANY Firefox EMPLOYEES to DEAL with ANYTHING??? NOWHERE, OF COURSE!!!
