Unable to save bookmarks into subfolders
I imported my bookmarks from Internet Explorer as I mostly use Firefox these days. My bookmarks have subfolders, for example specific events within an Events folder, etc. When attempting to save a new bookmark though, I can only see the main Events folder, but I cannot see/have the option to save directly into the subfolders, ie one specific event. (I can see the subfolders if I attempt to create a new folder, but am then left with a New folder in every folder that I will ever try to save things to; this is not a practical solution. This also shows that the subfolders were imported correctly and are actually saved somewhere). I have tried to read online what the resolution is for this and am getting the impression there is none. Like others who have asked similar questions, I have a well-organized filing system that I put a lot of time into, and that saves me time when I am looking for something. If there is no workaround I will unfortunately have to move everything to Chrome or Edge as it removes the other benefits of why I would like to support Firefox.

Is this what you are doing? Making a bookmark.
On the page you want to bookmark, do a right-click in an empty area of the page. At the top of the menu, press the Star. Hot key; <Control> (Mac=<Command>) D.
Or, Press the bookmarks Star on the toolbar.
This will place a bookmark in the Unsorted or Other Bookmarks Folder. To edit or move that bookmark, press the Star again.
A window will come up with the name of the page and its web address. You can edit these entries.
Next, select what bookmarks folder you want this bookmark in. If you do not see that folder, go to the far right of the Folder line, and press the down arrow. You can also create a new folder.
This is what I see when I ask to save this tab as a bookmark. As you can see, sub-folders of the folder 'moz' are listed. Are you possibly using Sync as that can be a cause for issues with bookmark folders ?
Note that if you imported IE favorites then best is to move (copy/paste) them from the "From Internet Explorer" folder to a folder in the Bookmarks Menu folder or in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.
FredMcD your description is the closest, but the downwards pointing arrow to the right brings up the entire list of bookmarks, not the sub folders of the folder that I have already indicated in the field. So I then have to scroll all the way down through all folders that are listed in the window underneath the Location field until I find that one in particular, and then I have seen there is a little arrow to the left of the folder name (arrow points right), that if I click then opens the subfolders.
As you indicated, ideally, I would leave the main folder in the Location field, and the arrow to the right of that field (downward pointing) would already open the sub-folders of that specific folder, meaning I just need to scroll through those sub folders to choose one, or add one new folder directly into that main folder. But that is not how it is working for me at the moment, ie I cannot see that option, which would be the most intuitive.
Also, I would like to get rid of the Bookmarks Toolbar and Bookmarks Menu folders and just keep everything as one single list (my folders and individual sites listings under All Bookmarks, is this possible?
You can turn the toolbars on/off as you wish.

Type about:customizing<enter> in the address box.
Note: about:customizing is no longer present in Firefox v47+ releases.
- Press Alt or F10 to bring up the Menu Bar. Then View > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Right-click on a blank spot on the toolbar and select Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Right-click on a blank spot on the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar.
Look for Show / Hide Toolbars or just Toolbars at the bottom left.
There is also a Restore Defaults button at the bottom right.
That is not possible, you can't remove any of the three root folders (Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, Other Bookmarks) and bookmarks and folders can only be created in one of these folders. In the Bookmarks Manager (Library; Ctrl+Shift+O) and sidebar (Ctrl+B) you can possibly use the search bar and type a common character like a colon (:) in this search bar.
