Firefox recently changed the Show all Bookmarks shortcut

Firefox recently changed the Show all Bookmarks shortcut from Ctrl + Shift + B to Ctrl + Shift + O.

Ctrl + Shift + B shortcut moved from Show all Bookmarks to Show/hide the Bookmarks toolbar.

For what reason and how stupid do you have to be to change something that had remained unchanged for years?

Or am I the stupid who cannot understand what the inevitable reason is to complicate people's lives?

Thanks.

Hi Nomen, this change in Firefox 84 is annoying for old timers like you and me whose fingers memorized this shortcut. But it seems there were not enough of us compared with people requesting that Firefox accommodate users accustomed to the keyboard shortcuts of other browsers.

Currently, I am not aware of any built-in way to change it back. Possibly one of the keyboard shortcut changing extensions might be able to re-route Ctrl+Shift+b to its old behavior but I haven't tested:

Some new keyboard shortcut to show/hide the bar is good.

Using a shortcut that has always been associated with another command is not good.

Why does Firefox have to adapt to the shortcuts of other browsers instead of other browsers to the shortcuts of Firefox?

The uniformity of the shortcuts of many different software would be great, due to so many annoying things (why on earth Word shift + f12 to save and shift + ctrl + t to find? And so on).

But it would take fixed and equal rules for everyone, as for the spelling and syntax of programming languages.

Thanks,

Enrico

They wanted to have a shortcut to be able to toggle the Bookmarks Toolbar as this previously wasn't possible, also for accessibility reasons. If other browsers already have such a shortcut key than that is usually the first choice Ctrl+Shift+O was already the shortcut key on Linux for the Library, so that shortcut key now is the same on all platforms.

Note that there will also be more options for showing the Bookmarks Toolbar (checkbox for showing the BT will become a sub menu) in Firefox 85. This is part of ongoing work behind the browser.toolbars.bookmarks.2h2020 pref.

  • browser.toolbars.bookmarks.visibility = [newtab|always|never]
  • browser.bookmarks.defaultLocation [guid|toolbar|menu|unfiled]
