Question about Firefox not being a recommended browser

I work at a nonprofit organization. On the helpdesk site for recommended browsers, there is this note about why Firefox is not a recommended browser. The note states: "Firefox has difficulty authenticating properly to Office365 and SharePoint."

Do you have information that I can pass on to our IT department to counter that comment?

Thanks --

You should ask your department to clarify what they are saying that. What Browser do are they using or recommend from? If that message isn't from Microsoft Office support then that can be a problematic message.

Hi Bluesky17, if the sites use Windows authentication -- they request your browser to share your windows username and password -- then Firefox will ask you for confirmation that it should provide the information. This can happen multiple times during your session, which is quite annoying.

Do you think that's the issue? There are some preferences in Firefox to add company servers to a "trusted" list for Windows authentication. The first of these is longstanding and the other two are for newer Windows methods:

  • network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris
  • network.negotiate-auth.delegation-uris
  • network.negotiate-auth.trusted-uris

Please check with your IT on whether using these preferences is a supported configuration, or whether there is some completely different issue.
