Hi and Good Day! I am facing issues in importing the MBOX file that I got from gmail account. I tried using ImportExport Extension and manually placing the mbox file in the local folder and restarting the Thunderbird but of no use. It just creates a folder in the local folder (once I open Thunderbird) and when I click over the said folder (in Thunderbird I named it GMAIL backup as shown in the image), no mails are extracted. Please help me out. I want to place backups of my emails in my local Thunderbird server. I am using Thunderbird 38.4.0 and OS is Windows Seven 64 bit. The size of the mbox file is 2.04GB.

Thank you!

Thunderbird is by no means a server.

Is backing up your stuff in the Gmail account the only purpose for downloading everything as a mbox file?

I haven't tried that before, so I'm not certain what exactly is in that mbox file. Thunderbird uses a mbox file per folder. If you do have only a single mbox file for your entire Gmail account, then this would be only a single folder. It could be 'All Mail' though, which literally contains all mail.

Where exactly did you put the Gmail mbox file? Please provide the full path including the file name.

Was Thunderbird closed when you did do this?

Did you try to disable your anti-virus software?

I want to keep my all old emails in my pc. and I want to access it by Thunderbird. So I downloaded all emails from gmail and they gave me a MBOX file. Now the problem is how to import the MBOX file into Thunderbird? OR is there any way to keep all my emails in my pc as backup. I need this because sometimes, I don't have access to internet and I need the emails. Now this is exactly what I tried;

  1. First I closed the Thunderbird. Then I copied the MBOX file in the local folder for which the path is; C:\Users\ABCD\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\abcdefgh.default\Mail\Local Folders
  2. Then I restarted the Thunderbird but I am not getting any thing as shown in the attached image.
  3. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials which was NOT disabled while I was doing this whole process.

Expecting a some good solution from you!

Even though what you did should work in the first place, Thunderbird is an email client, not a mail archiving software. There are other solutions available specifically for email archiving, which may better fit your needs, e.g like MailStore Home. Google is your friend.

The next thing I'd try would be with anti-virus disable. To be sure it's off you can start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled.

You didn't mention the name of mbox file.
