You can try this extension to override compatibility issues,

Once it is installed, open Addons Manager and re-enable Google Toolbar.

Addons Manager URL:    about:addons

Or you can go here and download the version just before 5.0

http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.php

I will not use Firefox 5.0 without having access to the Google Toolbar.

I wish they had told me that the GOOGLE Toolbar wouldn't work with FF 5 before I did the upgrade. I also won't use an internet browser without the GOOGLE Toolbar.

TU TexasGal. Others have been having the same issue and you are the ONLY person (internet blessings upon you!) who cited the direct url for old versions of Firefox. I'm going back now. Everyone else keeps saying add Google Toolbar as an add on without noticing that there is a compatibility issue. (tearing hair out, argh!). Thank you again! :-)

after installing this, I get a new top panel with nothing in it. now 1/5 of my 13" screen is covered with grey empty panel. So it didn't really solve the problem, now I have a new one (though I appreciate the help)

The Google Toolbar still works fine, you just need to disable the Firefox version check by installing the Compatibility Reporter add-on mentioned above, and restart Firefox twice. The problem is caused by Firefox, it forces add-on developers to specify the range of compatible versions. Nobody can of course predict if their add-ons will be compatible with a Firefox version that does not exist yet, so they just specify the latest version as maximum compatible version, which gave devs enough time to test and release an updated add-on, that is until Firefox decided to release major versions 4 and 5 within a few months, just for the sake of catching up version numbers with IE9 and Chrome 12. Until Google updates its add-on or decides to release one where the maximum compatible version number specified is 9999 because this feature is really a joke, you have the disable version numbers verification. Which probably introduces a security threat, no thanks to Firefox.
