The padlock icon has been replaced in Firefox because the developers found that it was misleading -- if you check for the padlock, it tells you that the connection is secure from eavesdropping, but it doesn't tell you whether you are connected to the correct site or to an imposter.

The replacement is the "site identity" button. You can learn more about it here: How do I tell if my connection to a website is secure?
