no automatic updates mozilla firefox 2.0.0.11 Eee PC 900 Linux

more options

I have had my eeepc 900 for over a year and have not received any updates from mozilla firefox. I am trying to upgrade to latest firefox but am not able to open downloads. The 'Tech' guy in Curry's could not download either! I am doing all this as I am not able to access my e mail with Talk Talk and this is apparently due to my browser.

Firefox versions that come with the various Linux distros aren't updated directly from Mozilla, they are updated thru the appropriate Linux program repository with all the other programs that are installed. That said, 2.0.0.11 was the last version available from the ASUS Xandros repository; and IIRC that came out like two years ago. Overall, I don't think there have been any updates from ASUS Xandros for well over a year and a half for any of their programs. IMO, they "got into bed" with Microsoft with their Netbooks and haven't updated any of their Linux software in a long time.

The version of Xandros Linux (from early 2007) that Asus is using on the eeePC doesn't have the GTK package needed to run Firefox 3+ versions, it needs to be updated.

I did that update myself on my EeePC 900 20GB and found that Xandros just didn't handle a Firefox 3+ version well at all. Firefox 3+ versions ran as slow on the EeePC, as they did on my ancient Pentium II 350MHz PC with Windows 2000. I replaced that 10 year old PC with a new one that I built - 2.2GHz - so I could run Firefox 3_ versions, and also newer versions of Open Office, which also killed that old PC's speed.

You should install a "modern" version of Linux. I went with EasyPeasy, an offshoot of Ubuntu, which is made specifically for Netbooks like the EeePC. EasyPeasy runs better than Xandros ever did for me.

Or, look into the Netbook version of Ubuntu.
