As of Thunderbird release 91.3.2, the composition screen default background color is black and the default text color is white. I cannot find where to set my defaults as black ink and white paper- as life has been since the invention of both. I can reverse the colors for each message I compose, but cannot get it to stick as a default.

Please advise.

Well, apparently using the Windows dark mode creates the conditions I described- black background, white lettering. I composed a text and sent it to my gmail account and other addresses I access via Thunderbird. All messages were rendered in black background with white text and received in black text on white background. This works for me. Thanks for your help.

There are display settings - read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-accessibility-features Check through all those Display settings. Also see if changing Composition > Enable/Disable "Use reader's default colors" makes any difference. And/or it might be a 'dark' theme. If you are in Windows and use Dark mode in Windows, Thunderbird may apply that setting. Or it may be set specifically in Thunderbird. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Add-ons > Themes. Read similar question https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1287563
