I'm trying to migrate my e-mail from a regular IMAP server to Gmail. My gmail account is completely empty.

I added both accounts to Thunderbird. When I drag the files from a folder from my IMAP server to Gmail it starts copying. When it is finished is see that not all or hardly any of the files are copied. Say of a selection of 244 mails I only see 5.

What is going wrong?

IMAP isn't very good for transferring mail between servers or even from the local computer to the IMAP server, which you have seen with a relatively small number of messages. You might have better luck with having the gmail account collect mail from the other server:
