TB is constantly freezing up and not responding when I'm typing an email.
Everytime i type an email (both long and short ones) TB goes into not responding approx. every 5 minutes. From what ive noticed, there are two instances when it freezes: 1) When i manually save an email that im typing. Changing the draft folder to a local one didnt help, when i save the email it still goes into not responding. 2) When im just typing away and not really doing anything, it frequently just freezes randomly. At first i thought it might be the autosaving, but when i disabled autosave the random freezing still happened frequently. Increasing the time interval of e.g. checking for emails didnt help anything either. Both problems still persist in offline mode too. When im just checking emails etc while not having open email draft, it never freezes up.
Ive had this problem for a rather long time and have already tried updating or reinstalling TB (which didnt help either). Please help me, im going crazy. I really like TB and dont want to have to use a different email software, but i cant take this anymore

What is your anti-virus software?
my anti virus software is avira. i already tried to check whether it scans the emails but i coulnt find any such options so i assume it doesnt
Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode - Win8 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17076/windows-8-startup-settings-safe-mode - Win7 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17419/windows-7-advanced-startup-options-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode
Does the problem go away?
i coulnt find any such options so i assume it doesnt
Check with Avira about this. The general recommendation is to exclude the Thunderbird profile folder from being scanned in real-time. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
excluding TB from avira hasnt helped. Im gonna try the safe mode now.
One interesting thing i noticed is that when i typed an email with just "hey hey hey" repeating over and over again and saved it, it didnt freeze, no matter how long the email got. As soon as i added random words like "shdfons" or a subject, it started freezing after saving again. Idk if that is relevant in any way, just wanted to note it
Im in safe mode right now and the problem has disappeared
Im in safe mode right now and the problem has disappeared
Im in safe mode
I'm assuming this is Windows safe mode. Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software. So chances are your problem is caused by Avira.
These are some general suggestions wrt anti-virus software. If you're having difficulties to implement these, please contact Avira.
Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it.
Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.
Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.
Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.
Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.
I have exluded the entirety of TB from avira as best as i could, but nothing has changed in any way. Couldnt find any other tips on the internet either. I guess ill just have to work around this problem somehow.... Thank you very much for trying to help me tho, im sure you tried your best :)
If not Avira then you may run some sort of other security software on your computer. It would be something which doesn't get started in Windows safe mode.
Holy cow! I must not be understanding this. Disabling anti-virus software for emails doesn't sound like a very practical or realistic solution!!! Avoid freezing up while typing emails in compose, but be vulnerable to viruses sent through emails?
I have webroot antivirus. It doesn't mess with anything I know of. If it's doing spot scans of an email I'm just writing in Compose, while I'm writing it, surely there must be a way to just stop that from happening, without opening up vulnerability to viruses.
Is there something in Thunderbird that does Compose in some "online" mode - which makes anti-virus look at what's being typed?
What Am I missing? Thanks!
