Including emoticons in email messages
My Thunderbird has an option of including smiley faces, laughing faces, etc etc. It is located on the top right immediatley above the text of the message.
Whenever I include them I have no idea if they're being delivered as emoticons or just the keys describing them. When my email gets a reply that includes my original email, they are only there as the keys describing them. When I open that email in my "sent" folder, it only shows the keys. When I send the email to myself as a test, it still only shows the keys. How can I make sure my Thunderbird email program is handling these correctly? Thank you.
Edit -- By "keys" I mean "keystrokes" or "keyboard characters" like a capital D, etc.

They are always sent as character sequences: :-) ;-) :-D etc. Whether or not they are displayed as graphics is a function of the recipient's email client.
Why aren't they displayed as graphics on my own email that I send to myself?
What setting do you have at Tools|Options|Display|Formatting→Display emoticons as graphics?
I have it set as 'Display emoticons as graphics. I unset it, and then reset it. ' It still doesn't work.
