Try to rebuild the Windows icon cache.
- Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
- In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
- Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
- Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
- Select the file IconCache.db and use Delete in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
- After the IconCache.db has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
It is possible that the file IconCache.db is a hidden file and in that case you need to enable viewing hidden files.
Verify that you can see the file before doing the above mentioned steps.
Thank you for the solution. I am going to be trying this tonight and I will post back if there was a resolve. I think that it is more than just the icons. If I open up any of the docs like calulator it opens up a page that ask how I wish to open this and of course you say internet explorer and it opens to another screen with the similar question. See imagery i include. Now for me to send this image I cannot open a microsoft program to write a document nor the paint program. I had to open an old photo that opens in the paint program to copy this image. See I do not know what happened. Somehow Firefox has become the default for all my common programs. if that makes any sense. I am not an expert on this, but if if you see something more please let me know. thank you so much. bmrz01
Try to ask advice on a Windows oriented forum about this issue. You seem to have some broken registry keys.
