I need guidance on using Thunderbird email (imap) with Rogers addresses, and on multiple machines, and multiple sub-folders. Thank you!

We have two ROGERS email addresses. For several years we operated wonderfully, in IMAP mode, and multiple sub-folders in each of the addresses, on multiple machines. About a month ago we started having password issues, and Rogers tech told me about the need to use the password auto-generate tool to 'connect to your app'. I've done that, and both machines (W7 & 10) work for a few hours, then sporadically give the 'retry or enter new password' message. Can you give me guidance on this? Specifically, do I generate the password on one machine and then use that same password on all machines; or do I need to generate a different password on each machine? Also, does the password self-propogate to all sub-folders? (eg, sometimes some folders work properly, while other sub-folders give the error). And should I always check "Use Password Manager", or leave it unchecked? … any help will be appreciated. Thank you! Dave H

Rogers uses Yahoo mail servers, and since TB now supports OAuth authentication for Yahoo, I suggest you use that for the account instead of 'normal password' authentication. Also, with OAuth, app-specific passwords are not needed, as the authentication process sets a token on each computer with the account; use OAuth and enter the usual account password, check 'Use Password Manager'.

With the proper authentication, you may find that folder subscriptions work better.

Thank you sfhowes, that answer sounded very hopeful. However, after setting 'Authentication Method' to OAuth2 (OAuth is not presented), I get the following message: The IMAP server imap.mail.yahoo.com does not support the selected authentication method. Please change the 'Authentication Method' in 'Account Settings / Server Setting'. … is there something else I could try? Thanks, Dave H

I may have jumped the gun re Yahoo/OAuth, as I added an AOL account (Yahoo mail type) with OAuth2 authentication to my TB setup. If you have to use 'normal password' and create an app password, check that access to 'less-secure apps' is enabled. There are details about IMAP, OAuth, subscriptions, app passwords etc. here:

I don't know if it makes any difference, but Rogers recommends imap.broadband.rogers.com for the incoming server and smtp.broadband.rogers.com for the outgoing.
