Very slow opening sent folder (10 minutes), and slow sending messages. (win10, no AV)

Hi, At work we use Thunderbird a lot, we've got multiple locations and two people responding to the messages. They both use the same accounts but on different machines, as of yesterday Thunderbird started to be really slow when it came to sending messages, the part where it copies the sent messages to the sent folder. Along with this; opening a sent folder was even slower to the point where you could easily wait 10 minutes before the freshly sent messages even appears in the "sent" folder of that machine.

All of that happened on PC1, while PC2 just opens the sent folder and can see the freshly sent message, while PC1 has to wait like 10 minutes.

I've tried emptying the sent folders untill the last 50 messages (used to be 5K+) but there's still no improvement in loading speed. both machines are brand new, and have been in use since 6 weeks, so there's barely anything on them. What might be the problem? And how could we fix this.

That's most unusual, no AV software? How do you protect them?

Anyway, next step - right+click Sent folder and pick compact.

Also, in "disk space" at tools > options > advanced > network and disk there were items related to compact - a checkbox and an amount. What are those settings?

It says it uses 570 MB on the disk, but there's also 1097 messages back in it. But even then I can hardly imagine 1000 messages being 570mb

yeah, that would be approx 500k per message!

I assume both symtoms are highly reprodicble. Before we try anything to fix this, a test...

Please start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Does problem go away?

I'll have to try that in a few hours because both of the computers are in full use right now. They'll be having a lunch break around 12:00 GMT +1, I'll try to run it in safemode and post the results on here.

Great.

Related to that test it will also be helpful if you can report the following:

  • What AV and malware software are running?
  • What values for "disk space" at tools > options > advanced > network and disk?
  • Is "allow windows search" enabled at tools > options > advanced > general?

  • No AV or Malware software.
  • I've turned on the override for automatic cache use to 500mb, both pc's have 16GB RAM.
  • Windows search is disabled.

Problem still persists in Safemode.

Protection is done by the mail provider, we're working with personal information, every mail get's scanned by a trusted third party before they get relayed to these mailboxes.

Is the compaction being executed on just one pc? or do I have to compact on both devices?

The second checkbox is not activated.

Compact (which is not compression) rebuilds the folder so that all the messages that have been marked for deletion no longer occupy physical disk space. It affects only the one PC.

The second checkbox is not activated.

So that could be causing your problem. Do you know who installed thunderbird or controls the settings?

That might've been my fault, should the checkbox be activated? I'm the IT guy around here, I installed and manage the devices.

what is folder size after compact?

At 20mb is good? does it give pop-ups though? I remember turning something off because it kept giving pop-ups about compacting, even when checking the box to not show again and just auto-compact.

The box is now at 571mb. I'm now waiting on their feedback before on the slow-loading.

I can understand why you disabled automatic. There are rare reports where the popup disable doesn't work, and those users get annoyed.

For starters, let's sort out the Sent folder. Do properties > repair on that folder. What is the size? If the size is the same then perhaps there really are large messages in there?

For automatic compact, I find 20MB (the default) to be small. 100MB or 200MB has been great for me.

I think so, maybe messages with large or multiple attachments, even after repair it stays at around 571mb, however, it is much faster after compacting now? though the file size is exactly the same?.

Everytime we tried opening the folder it took 10+ minutes to just open, let alone pick a message to read it, after compacting, a mouse click on the sent folder and the folder opens, also when trying to open a message to read it.

however 570 is still 570ish after compacting.
