We have migrated from Outlook to TB running Win7 and Win8 platforms, we also use internal developed software which use MAPI protocols to send email. TB is now setup as the default mail client and when the software tries to send an email the software can't find TB as the default mail client.

The question is: which protocol should we use to send emails via TB. When the software tries to send an email with the MAPI settings it comes back with a message that Outlook can not be found. The emails are tracked and the sent email must end up in the sent folder of the mail client

When you right-click on any file and select Send To > Mail Recipient, does it open Thunderbird with that file attached? If not, the default e-mail client isn't correctly configured.

Windows can be stubborn preferring its own applications as default rather than others. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_mail_client for some hints.

It may also happen that an application is hard-wired to use Outlook, then there may not be much that can be done other than complaining to the company.

If MAPI doesn't work, Thunderbird can also be invoked from the command line, e.g., when the program supports scripting.
