I am running OSX 10.5.8, trying to run the latest version of firefox still compatible with my system (16.0.20. I got this error message and tried multiple solutions that I found here. I deleted my profile and it did not create a new one. Reinstalled firefox, still got the error. I then deleted EVERYTHING related to firefox on my computer and reinstalled again, and STILL got the error. At this time I have firefox installed but there is NO firefox folder anywhere on my computer and I STILL get this error message. There isn't even a profiles.ini file on my computer, and firefox wont create a new folder for itself in application support.

Please help me, I really do want to continue using firefox.

Hello Spoodish, did you delete also the .plist file at ~/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist ?

if the program is installed in the "Applications" folder, launch Terminal ("Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal") and enter the command starting with / after the prompt in Terminal, to see if we can open the profile manager to create a new profile:

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -profilemanager

thank you

download with safari (or other browser), Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5 and then delete the plist file, and try to install the new download version (16.0 from the above link). Works ?

thanks again

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -ProfileManager

So far I have deleted: The firefox app The firefox folder in Library/Application Support The plist you described as well as the plists for thunderbird and mozilla crash reporter As far as I can tell there is nothing left of firefox on my computer. I tried searching for "mozilla" and "firefox" in finder, if there are any other profile folders or firefox folders left I have no idea where they are.

The terminal commands I have tried all lead firefox to an insta-crash, presumably due to the same problem.

Did you try to delete the profiles.ini file to force Firefox to create a new default profile?

I already had them deleted as well

There should be a profiles.ini file somewhere.
Otherwise you wouldn't get this error.

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
