My Sony Xperia ZR is running out of internal memory. One of the culprits happens to be Firefox which seems to be occupying around 350+ MB of space. I have a separate SD card and wish to either move Firefox completely to it or at least move the profile data to it so that it frees up space. How do I do it?

Curtis, - Are you a bot? - Here is the information you requested: Sony Xperia ZR C5502 Android OS version 4.3 Idea Cellular (although I am not sure why it is relevant to the question above)

Hey,

No, I'm not a bot :) The reason I said that was because you tagged your problem as "Firefox OS" as opposed to "Firefox for Android".

Open the Android OS settings. Select Apps. Select Firefox from the list and there will be a move to sdcard option. This will move all the application files of Firefox to the sdcard.

@Curtis Parfitt-Ford

Nope. It is Firefox for Android. Where did I tag Firefox OS? Before posting this question I was lead through a questionnaire where I did select Firefox for Android. I understand the difference between Firefox OS and Firefox for Android.

@kbrosnan

It is no longer possible to move applications to SD card. I believe this change was done after 4.2 Jelly Bean. (Samsung seems to have some workaround for this but Sony does not)

And even when that option is used, Firefox still occupies a lot of internal memory. (I also have a Sony Ericsson Live With Walkman on 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in which the Move to SD card option exists. That option only moves a limited amount of things to SD card.)

I am attaching a screenshot of my phone's internal memory occupied by various applications of which Firefox tops the list.

Yes that is expected it will use space for the browser cache and user profile. Both are kept on the main partition for security.

more options

How to override this security setting? I am not that concerned about security. I would rather have some usable free space in my internal memory.

This will be felt very badly in devices with low internal memory.

more options

It is not possible to the best of my knowledge.

more options

Probably possible through indirect means which would need rooting the phone. Possible candidates are Link2SD which will move the actual Firefox files to a 2nd partition on the SD card. Folder Mount of which I have heard but not yet tried could be another option.

Having a built-in option would be nice without having to modify the phone firmware itself which might be a greater security risk overall.

Can I request this feature and if Yes then where?

Regards, -SS.

You can file a bug for this to see if it's feasible for developers to do this. You can do this by visiting the link below. You will need to register to Bugzilla to file a new bug. I've filed it in the Gaia category although it will most likely be moved by a triager to the correct category if necessary.

Note:' not all requests for features will be considered.
