Hi,

I run OS X Mountain Lion which I have configured with an admin account and a non admin account for my daily work.

When the Firefox 15 update became available, I opened the "About Firefox" dialog, it downloaded the update and I hit "apply". It then tries to apply the update but when Firefox started again, I was still running version 14. I then noticed it had opened a second dialog which suggested I applied the update ASAP.

I figure it was because my user account doesn't have admin access, but I thought it would then ask for permission?

Anyway, I then switched to my admin account, started Firefox and opened the "About Firefox" dialog again to try to apply the update. Surprisingly, I couldn't do that - it didn't download any update and there was no "apply update" button. Instead it told me "Updates available at http://firefox.com".

I then downloaded the Firefox 15 manually and installed it using my admin account.

Shouldn't this "just work"?

Hi jramskov,

You already do the right thing, if there is an issue with update or permissions the better way is to download and install the new version, yes it will work without problem.

thank you

Of course the right thing is to update it manually, but that's not really the issue. The issue is why didn't it update automatically?

And why was the update mechanism suddenly disabled/replaced with a link?

How many will experience the same and not update and then be using an old, insecure browser "forever" because the autoupdate failed?

I'm fully aware of that because I already solved the problem before posting. I'm simply curious about how Firefox is supposed to work and why it didn't provide me with the option to update in the about dialog?
