Without special tools and/or extra clicks, opening a bookmark, opening a past page, or opening a closed tab over-writes an existing tab, such as the tab I'm working on.

I have rsi, so I want to be able to open bookmarks and history without several extra clicks each time.

I currently use the extension "Open Bookmarks in New Tab" to open bookmarks and history. It works. But it isn't compatible with 57+. I have tried disabling this extension, and testing other extensions, but the other extensions don't work.

These commands open a new window for what you call for;

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Open the History Manager; Hot key is; <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> H.

I don't have anything to help with history, but for bookmarks:

Firefox 57 has a new preference to automatically direct bookmarks to a new tab:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste book and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs preference to switch the value from false to true

(4) If desired, switch these as well if you think you might want to open more than one bookmark at a time:

  • Open the tab in the background (don't immediately switch to the bookmarked page): browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground => true
  • Keep the bookmarks menu open until you close it: browser.bookmarks.openInTabClosesMenu => false

Actually, this part is strange:

If you re-open a closed tab using any of these methods, it should restore that tab wherever it was before, as a separate tab, and switch to that tab:

  • right-click a tab > Undo Close Tab
  • Ctrl+Shift+t
  • History menu > Recently Closed Tabs > click individual title

That sounds useful. I'll test it if and when I can try Quantum.

I right-click on the selected Bookmark and click Open in a New Tab

I usually use the mouse scroll button to open links in a new tab via a middle-click. That works for items in the Tab bar history drop-down list and for items in the Recently Closed Tabs list and links that would normally open in the current tab. You can also middle-click the Reload button to duplicate the current tab.
