Although the following tabs were closed when I exited Firefox, they reload every time I restart Firefox. I have had this problem in the past with some of the same pages reloading. How do I get these pages to stop reloading every time I restart Firefox?

Although I CAN just close the pages, it gets tiresome after awhile, closing the same pages time after time.

I have had this same problem off and on with Firefox. In the past I have just created a new profile, but it takes far too long to create a new profile with all of my customizations and extensions and add-ons.

You can check the home page setting.

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page

If you do not keep changes the you can check for problems with preferences and try to rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js files and a possible user.js file to reset all prefs to the default values.

The home page setting shows only one url: www.google.com

I don't wish to lose my settings. I have a custom toolbar and several add-ons that each have their own complex settings. It takes the better part of a day to reconfigure Firefox back to where it was prior to creating a new profile. If I delete the prefs.js (and there are 4 files labeled prefs.js in my current profile folder and subfolders, plus 3 prefs-#) how will that affect my personal modifications?

Deleting or removing the prefs.js file will only affect the settings that you've made in Options and settings for your extensions. It shouldn't affect the toolbar customization (that data is stored in localstore.rdf).

If you have multiple prefs files then that is an indication that there have been problems with the original prefs.js file.
You can try to rename the prefs.js file to prefs.js.sav and remove or move all other prefs files (there should only be a prefs.js file) to force Firefox to create a new file.
You can open the prefs.js file with a plain text editor if you want to inspect your previous settings, but be careful with copying lines with Firefox closed from the old prefs.js file to the new prefs.js file.

After closing Firefox, I deleted all of the pref.js files including the prefs-##.js files. However this did not solve the problem. The same 7 closed pages reloaded upon restarting Firefox. Any other suggestions?

You can check for problems with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

After bookmarking all of my open tabs (48 tabs in 6 groups), using bookmark all tabs option. I closed all of my tabs except for my home page. I exited Firefox, and deleted sessionstore.js (514kb) and sessionstore.bak (519kb) and restarted Firefox. It opened with all of the problem tabs (except now there are 9, not 7). The newly created sessionstore.js is 7kb. If I examine the new sessionstore.js file with Notepad, I can see the url's of all of the problem tabs listed.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

You can also try to reset Firefox:
