Thunderbird asks for smtp password, but refuses to accept it when I do
I use Win 10, and just had to reinstall it on my desktop PC, hence also reinstall Thunderbird. At first it worked OK, though I didn't have a Sent Mail folder. So I reinstalled Thunderbird, and at first it worked OK. Indeed it's still working in that it receives emails. I just can't send them now, because it asks for the smtp password. So I checked that on my laptop, where Thunderbird is working fine, but my desktop machine still refuses to accept it, even though I KNOW it's right! |Just to be absolutely clear, the same password on the same e-mail account works on my laptop, but not on my desktop machine. Help seriously appreciated!

usual cause is anti virus related. disable an email scanning rebooot and try again.
What anti virus are you using?
Could be, I guess. Though why it should happen now when I’ve been using Norton Security Suite for years without problems, and also use it on my laptop, where Thunderbird works fine ... I’m afraid I don’t understand “disable an email scanning rebooot”, which is doubtless just me. If you could explain it, I’ll try it!
This may be a good place to mention another problem which might be related - I couldn’t log into this forum with the relevant email address, as it claimed I was using the wrong password when I wasn’t. Just like Thunderbird. And so I had to create a new account using a different email, which worked fine (and which worked fine on Thunderbird too)
I am now solving the Thunderbird problem by testing another e-mail client, but would still like to understand the cause of this.
Thanks for your response, which is appreciated.
