"All Bookmarks" appears in "unsorted bookmarks" folder - infinitely recursively nested

In the bookmarks library I have the top folder "All bookmarks" which contains "Bookmarks Toolbar", Bookmarks Menu" and "Unsorted Bookmarks" .

Inside the "Unsorted Bookmarks" is a second folder called "All bookmarks" which contains the same 3 folders as above. opening the second "Unsorted Bookmarks" shows another 'All bookmarks' and it contains the same 3 folders, and so on

Deleting a bookmark from any folder results in it being deleted from all the others - so they are referring to the same location, not just copies. I have tried creating a new profile, exporting deleting and re-importing all bookmarks - but the problem persists.

Firefox is also hanging on me several times a day - which may be related.

Soluție aleasă

After further experimentation I resolved the problem myself - solution here in case anyone else runs in to it. For what it's worth I think it may have been related to the xmarks extension, but i used Xmarks to fix it too :)

> Force update of latest Firefox bookmarks to Xmarks server

> Force download of same set into Chrome

> in Chrome delete contents of "Unsorted Bookmarks" , and then the folder for good measure.

>Force upload to server, overwriting old set

>Force download into Firefox, which cleared out the Unsorted folder

> :)

Sounds that you had a problem with a corrupted places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Thanks for responding.

My first googling suggested corrupt places.sqlite - but deleting the file didn't fix it. I guess when the bookmarks were re-imported from backup (or by xmarks) the problem came back with them.

Anyway - I've been using FF since I last posted and all seems good so far :)

I have exactly the same problem (screenshot attached), but I don't have Xmarks. I do have the Delicious extension installed (well, had, since it's not compatible with FF 16), but I suspect it might have to do with the Sync operations. This bug appears to be the relevant one.

Hmmm. I backed up my bookmarks and tried deleting the three folders from the root Unsorted Bookmarks folder (the one with the special icon) and apparently that fixed the problem. Deleting those folders didn't delete the original ones (even though deleting sub-folders of them would delete the subfolder on the original!).

@waldyrious That bug may well be related. The conversation refers to Weave (now Firefox sync) which I used to use. I switched to xmarks as I need to sync to Chrome as well.

I suppose its 'good news' that the problem is within firefox, not my bookmarks manager - means I don't have to look for another sync solution....

I am not using any third-party sync plugin / add-ons and I also have this problem.

Does deleting places.sqlite delete my bookmarks too?

@TenLeftFingers, In my case, even though I had the Delicious extension installed, I figured that the problem was likely caused by Firefox's native Sync mechanism, rather than any third-party plugin. If you try the same procedure I described in my previous comment, does that make any difference?

@waldyrious - thank you! That did work. I did a backup and deleted the parent folders under Unsorted. Then I chose 'sync now' from the Tools menu. I then did the same on my other machines and we're looking good.

Thanks again!
