I just downloaded Firefox 4, and normally what I would in Firefox 3.6, I would type a keyword in the URL bar. And it comes up saying that I'm searching using: jar:file:///C:/Program Files (x86)/Mozilla Firefox/omni.jar!/chrome/en-US/locale/browser-region/region.properties

I don't know where that came from, so I opened about:config, went to keyword.URL and switched to Google. Okay, it works now. I exit it, and I later on opened it back up. I put in a word again. The same thing came up from when I started: jar:file:///C:/Program Files (x86)/Mozilla Firefox/omni.jar!/chrome/en-US/locale/browser-region/region.properties

I try fixing it again. It works now. It seems the problem is the keyword.URL value keeps resetting, but I don't know how it got "jar:file:///C:/Program Files (x86)/Mozilla Firefox/omni.jar!/chrome/en-US/locale/browser-region/region.properties" to appear on it. So, is this just a bug on Firefox 4, or am I just the only one experiencing it? And if so, how can I solve this problem? I know I have like two other search engines available for use on my browser, but I mostly use the URL bar to search. Any solutions?

The jar: issue can be caused by the "Ask.com Toolbar" or the "ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker Toolbar" or the Fox-it toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions).

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

I went into Safe Mode, deleting some add-ons and extensions I assume is causing the problem. I fix keyword.URL again, and I restarted again (with add-ons disabled). It's fixed, but when I turn on all the add-ons I normally use, the problem still persists. What other solution is there?

I'm having the same problem the only Extensions I have are AdBlock Plus, Java Console 6.0.20, Java Console 6.0.24, Java Quick Starter 1.0, and the Zynga toolbar.

I discrovered few problematic addons: .free-downloads.net Toolbar (Alcohol Toolbar), Zynga Tollbar. These addons deactivated (or better - removed) are not trying to add this causing failure entry in keywords.URL option in FF 4 configuration DB. Hope - this can helps :)

Update: Adblock Plus 1.3.6+ not causes this issue!

The problem is NOT related with the toolbars, I just have AVG Toolbar which I has used on Firefox 3.6 and I never had such problems.

EDIT: This has been fixed on Firefox 8.0

How can we get someone from Mozilla to correctly answer these questions instead of people like us? No offence, but there are different answers to this question all over the net and none of them are right. It is frustrating enough at time to drop Firefox altogether.
