Firefox Reverts Back to Old Version

We rec'd errors that we were using an older version of Firefox. We updated it and then overnight it reverts back to the older version. We have uninstalled the old version, restarted the computer, reinstalled the new version, etc, with no luck.

Hi ronmurtaugh, this is an error from Firefox itself or from a particular website you visit?

Could you check the version and related info listed on the Troubleshooting Information page, first table of data. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Usually on 64-bit Windows you'll find:

  • Version: 78.0.1 or higher
  • User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0
  • Application Binary: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe

If that varies between the time Firefox seems to be working normally and when you get an old version message, what differences do you notice, if any?

Firefox itself. It started with a black pop up box stating that we were using an older version of Firefox. No matter what we selected, I think it was Okay or Cancel, it kept coming back. I think it was version 68 (I have to get over to that machine to look at it). We are a large company with a stone network. We thought it was a profile issue, at first. So we uninstalled the version 68 and installed the new version and I think it said version 78. So we had people just "lock" their computer and not log off. They used 78 all day with no issues. Today, one person just now reported 78 went all day yesterday and most of the morning. They went to break and when they came back it reverted back to the old version.

Firefox 68 had a regular release, and it also has an Extended Support Release. These are different update channels, so the ESR should only require ESR patches and not switching to the regular release (Firefox 78.0.2). The Troubleshooting Information page also has a line for Update Channel which would indicate which Firefox 68 it is. If you could have the next person check that page, it might be helpful. I could understand an enterprise configuration to keep Firefox 68 ESR up-to-date, but I can't understand why the old regular release of Firefox 68 would show up.
